It's been too long..

Happy New Year BGSR Fans!!!!

It's been way too long since my last blog update, pretty much a whole month. It was getting pretty crazy those last couple weeks with finals and after school ended I was just beat. But so much stuff has happened in the last month. Nicole Hubbard, star defender from the women's soccer team, came on my second to last show of 2009, and I got to pick her brain about the disappointing season this year. The interview went great and I hope I can get her to come on again. Also on that show Kevin McConnell former men's basketball team manager was nice enough to come on air and talk basketball with me. He's been the head manager for 4 years so he knows all the ins and outs of what goes on with the team, and gave me tons of insight. I will definitely be asking him to come on my show again deeper into the basketball season.

On my last show of the year, I was so lucky enough to get ED RATLEFF on the show!!!!!

But Anthony How on Earth did you get 49er legend Ed Ratleff on YOUR show???

Well, I was playing in the Long Beach State Golf Tourney and my friend Mark Andrews introduced me to him, and I asked him if he would be on my show. Without any hesitation he said he would be more than willing to come on my show. So a few weeks later I called him up and set up a day and time to come in for a recorded interview.

So Mr. Ratleff came in a few hours before my show actually starts, and I had a few questions prepared for him. To be honest I was a little nervous, but who could blame me it was ED RATLEFF 49er legend, played in the olympics and the NBA. But Mr. Ratleff was the nicest and funniest guy ever. I was only expecting a 10-15 minute interview, but it ended up being a 40 minute interview!!!! He talked about his days here at Long Beach State, and playing for Tark the Shark. He also talked about the '72 Olympics where the American team was robbed of a gold medal, and his 5 seasons with the Houston Rockets in the NBA.

It was such an awesome interview, and if you missed it you're in luck you can download it!!! YES, my show is finally podcasted. So you can put me on your iPOD and listen to the Black and Gold Sports Report anytime you like. There's a podcast section on www.kbeach.org and you can get all of my shows and interview with Ed Ratleff.

No new show this week as I am still in my hometown REDLANDS, but next week will be my first show the decade and it will be at a new time!! Since the student union closes at 7pm instead of midnight I'll be on Thursday at 6pm!!

All I want for Xmas is an.....UPSET!!!

How goes it BGSR fan? I hope you're thanksgiving break was as awesome, and filled your self silly with turkey.

SOOOO it was good to be back and doing my show again. I had the week off, but the break must thrown my skills off because it was far from perfect. I couldn't get my any of my SFX to work, and that totally through me off.

I had a couple bright spots though. Mark Andrews came on the show as a guest. If you're not familiar with Mark he was the ASI President two years ago and a really good friend of mine. He is actually going off to the marines tomorrow and thought it would be cool to have him come on and hang out with him before he shipped out. We just talked about his time as president and what it was like working for the the Long Beach Athletic Dept.

I also had my first callers!!! Even though you couldn't hear the whole call for one..and heard me briefing the other caller when a SONG WAS PLAYING. But it was still pretty awesome having my first callers. Keep calling guys it will only get better haha.

On to some LBSU news...

Over the thanksgiving weekend The Beach was pretty busy with women's volleyball and Men's and women's Basketball. Every year the women's team plays in the Mizuno Classic, and it didn't start out so well. They lost the opening game to TCU, but The Beach bounced back strong and won the next three games against UNLV, LMU, and Utah st.

The Women's Basketball team played in a tourny hosted by the Univ of Miami AKA "DA U". The Beach opened the tourny against the canes but they were just too much for them, and lost 83-66. The next day The Beach faced Rice and got contributions from everyone which led to victory. The Beach also faced USC which was a big game because that was where Coach Wynn was assistant coach before coming to LBSU. The Beach looked undersized but that didn't seem to matter as they played really scrappy and Karina's rapid scoring (26) cut the women of troy's lead to 3 with 18 seconds left. But solid free throw shooting sealed the deal.

The Men's Basketball team played in the third annual 76 Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center. I was able to attend two of the three games. The first game was against West Virginia, and to say the least we had it handed to us (85-62). It was the first game they looked over matched in AND they're best player Devin Ebanks didn't even play.

The next game was against Clemson or as President Alexander would say "Clempson". I watched this game on television, and I don't know what Monson said to those guys but it definitely lit a fire under their butts. They played really aggressive and got to the line a significantly more than their counterparts, but they missed 14 freethrows....and ended up losing by 8, 87-79.

Sunday's game The Beach played against UCLA in the 7th place game, and the first half was very sloppy on both sides. Even though it was sloppy I knew Long Beach was a better team and we could win. At the half The beach was up and one and soon stretched the lead to as many as 17 points. Long Beach looked like the dominant team through the whole second half and went on to win 79-68. Picking up the win over the Bruins gives Long Beach their first win in 12 tries.

I specifically didn't say who was the leading scorer in all three games in the above paragraph because he deserved his own. TJ Robinson was an absolute beast this tourny YES TJ Robinson and not Larry Anderson. TJ scored double figures in all three games including back to back 25 point games against Clemson and UCLA earning him a spot on the All 76 Classic Tourny team. Larry was the exact opposite failing to score double digits in all three games and getting his first FG against UCLA.

The Men's team continues their disgustingly hard non conf schedule when the take on Texas on Monday. In case you've forgotten they also play Kentucky, and Duke. If we can get an upset on any of those teams I would burst out tears of joy to say the least.

So Santa I think I've been good...CAN I GET AN UPSET PLZZ!!!!????

PS- I have a special guest for this week....Star Defender Nicole Hubbard from the women's soccer team be sure to tune in!!!!

First Blog Post!!!!!

What up Long Beach???!! I'm new to the blogging scene,we'll see how it goes.

So far the "Black and Gold Sports Report" (BGSR) has been going good so far. I've had 6 shows and it started out pretty rocky with tons of mistakes, but it has been improving after each show. Having great guests also helps. I've had TJ Robinson from the men's basketball team, Wayne Stickney from the Athletics Dept, Phil Goodman and Clay Perry from the LBSU Ice Hockey Team. I have a lot more guests scheduled so the few who actually listen keep on listening and tell your friends, moms, dads, grandparents, just tell anyone you know with a computer haha.Right now I am working on getting all my shows podcasted so you can listen on your own time.

On to some news....Congrats to the womens volleyball team!!! They clinched another Big West title, and five beach players were honored in the Big West!!! They play in the Mizuno Tournament this weekend at the Mid. Be sure to check out the BW Champs in action.

The Men's Basketball team looks good 4 games into the season with a 3-1 record. Their only loss against Luke Harrangody and Krew (Notre Dame), and their wins coming against Alaska, Pepperdine, and Wisc Green Bay. The Beach is participating in the 76 Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center starting tomorrow at 11am. They will be taking on #8 West Virginia. WV's best player Devin Ebanks hasn't played yet but decided to grace Anaheim with his presence. Let's hope we can get pull a Fullerton and get an upset.

Hope to see you guys in Anaheim tomorrow and have an awesome Thanksgiving!!!! Eat a lot and bring back a lot to your dorms haha!! Ill have another post next week.

GO BEACH!!!!
